BoxBoy! + BoxGirl! (Switch) Review

Box Meets Girl

Against all odds, Kirby series developer HAL Laboratory and Nintendo’s hero has finally returned – yes, good old BoxBoy. It’s hard to blame anyone for not being familiar with BoxBoy!, which spawned a trilogy of 3DS games and even an amiibo figurine. Although the last game’s title was Bye-Bye BoxBoy!, the creators saw fit to continue the series with BoxBoy! + BoxGirl! on the Nintendo Switch, which also marks the franchise’s debut on consoles.

Unravel Two (Switch) Review

Epic Yarny

I’ve had my fair share of wonderful memories handing a Joy-Con controller to my wife and enjoying a game together. Co-op games are well-suited to the Nintendo Switch, and Swedish developer Coldwood and EA’s Unravel Two is no exception. The puzzle platformer costars sentient yarn creatures called Yarny, who can, fittingly, be customized and color-coded to match the Switch’s Joy-Con colors.

Degrees of Separation (Switch) Review

An Icy-Hot Puzzle Platformer

Degrees of Separation begins as a modest platformer. You first take the role of Ember, a girl living in a world of eternal summer. Before you can get used to her warm presence, the perspective suddenly switches to Rime, a boy who serves as the last defender of a kingdom of ice. Control shifts between Ember and Rime, drawn to each other by a strange force. At last, the two discover one another and reach out their hands. But they cannot touch, for neither can leave their own worlds – one of intense heat, the other of a bitter cold. This scene was the game’s defining magical moment that instantly hooked me in.

The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince (Switch) Review

Beauty is the Beast

Let me tell you a story. There once was a wolf who sang atop a cliff every night. A young prince heard her voice, and without knowing the singer’s identity, applauded. The wolf appreciated the praise, and she continued singing for him every night. Then one day, the prince climbed the cliff to meet the singer. The wolf, nervous of what the prince would think of her appearance, slashed the prince’s eyes. Feeling remorseful, the wolf, under the disguise of a young princess, set out on a quest to escort the blind prince across a treacherous forest to seek aid from a witch. This is the tale of The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince.

Valiant Hearts: The Great War (Switch) Review

Connected Hearts at War

Valiant Hearts isn’t your typical war game. It isn’t a first-person shooter where you run in guns blazing. Rather, it is a slower puzzle adventure title centering on four ordinary individuals. It shares their poignant experiences during the Great War, otherwise known as World War I.
