Lapis x Labyrinth (Switch) Review

Literal Treasure Explosion

Playing Lapis x Labyrinth is the equivalent of entering a glitzy casino and witnessing every slot machine simultaneously explode with coins. There’s a dazzling aura to this 2D hack-and-slash action RPG, and cute, hyperactive visuals feed into its eye-catching wackiness.

The Princess Guide (Switch) Review

How to Train Your Princess

Princesses are often relegated to damsels in distress. The Princess Guide turns that concept on its head and stars not one, but four princesses on heroic quests. You play as an instructor whose goal is to train these leading ladies to be strong rulers.

The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince (Switch) Review

Beauty is the Beast

Let me tell you a story. There once was a wolf who sang atop a cliff every night. A young prince heard her voice, and without knowing the singer’s identity, applauded. The wolf appreciated the praise, and she continued singing for him every night. Then one day, the prince climbed the cliff to meet the singer. The wolf, nervous of what the prince would think of her appearance, slashed the prince’s eyes. Feeling remorseful, the wolf, under the disguise of a young princess, set out on a quest to escort the blind prince across a treacherous forest to seek aid from a witch. This is the tale of The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince.

Yomawari: The Long Night Collection (Switch) Review

A Night of Horrors

The word Yomawari roughly translates to “night watchman.” It’s an apt description of my experience with Yomawari: The Long Night Collection: patrolling a small Japanese town alone at night. In this survival horror game, monsters lurk around every corner, ready to kill. This collection compiles two games: Yomawari: Night Alone and its sequel Yomawari: Midnight Shadows. Both appear to be cute adventures at first glance, but as the old saying goes, “things aren’t always as they seem.”

Disgaea 1 Complete (Switch) Review

The Hour of Darkness Returns, Dood!

It’s hard to think of Japanese developer Nippon Ichi Software without associating it with Disgaea. The strategy RPG series put the company on the map, and its iconic penguin-like Prinnies have become synonymous with their brand. Disgaea 1 Complete, an HD remaster of the original PlayStation 2 title Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, is a return to the franchise’s roots. This rerelease hasn’t aged as well as its sequels, but it remains a solid unconventional take on the genre.
