Weekly Panda Roundup – E3 Impressions of Every Conference

Hello everyone! Hope you all had a great weekend! Once again, ours was busy, thanks to a lot of big events lately — the biggest of which was my wonderful wife, Crystal Dragon’s birthday! Be sure to wish her a Happy Birthday! Of course, E3 was also last week, and we recorded a couple of videos to celebrate the exciting games conference. Plus, I have more impressions to share about each big press conference.

So without further ado, let’s round ‘em up!

Nintendo E3 Spotlight Impressions & Reactions

To start off the E3 fun, Crystal Dragon and I recorded our impressions and reactions directly following Nintendo’s Spotlight presentation. This is our second video recording in a brand new style we’re experimenting with, in which we have an on-screen, more ad-libbed discussion. It’s definitely different for us, but we hope you enjoy our enthusiasm and excitement for all the new upcoming Nintendo Switch games! Please let us know what you think of our new style as we move forward and if you’d like to see more of it!

This next video is actually pre-E3 and covered our predictions going into Nintendo’s Spotlight event. How many of our predictions came true? How ridiculous were our guesses? Even though we now know what happened at E3, this video contains our wish list of ideas for the Switch. As long as they haven’t yet happened, it’s something we hope will happen! This is our first video with our new on-camera style, so we’d love to hear what you think!

Snipperclips Co-Op Part 10 – Rock-a-Bye Blobby

In Part 10 of our co-op Snipperclips playthrough, we continue our scientific field trip into uncontrolled chaos and silly science! We deal with red and blue jeans… err… blue genes and insomniac Blobbies. Do we have the science tools to put Blobby to sleep? Find out what this Nintendo-published puzzler is all about, and why we’re so enamored by it! This is one of our personal favorites and perhaps funniest episode so far so be sure to check it out, especially if you haven’t seen any of the playthrough already!

As always, you can start with the above episode or find the full playlist starting at Part 1 – Stabby Sticks here: http://bit.ly/2nFmc5v

E3 Impressions

I shared our Nintendo impressions in both video and written form above and in this post. Although I spent most of E3 following and writing about Nintendo content, I also checked out all the other major press conferences. Here are my impressions and some game highlights from each E3 presentation!

E3 2017
Nobody calls it EEE though.

Sony

If I hadn’t seen E3 in the last couple of years, I think Sony’s press conference would have been amazing. Unlike Sony’s previous press conferences, this one had a clear focus on showing games, of which there were many. The downside is they were all games we had already seen last year. Sure, we now have a vague early 2018 release date for most of them (we’ll see if they make them), and the trailers looked great. But other than a Shadow of the Colossus remake reveal and a gorgeous Monster Hunter World trailer, the conference lacked that surprise factor that made us all drop our jaws in previous years. I understand the business decision to reveal all these games early on to get people to buy a PlayStation 4, but as a result, the show felt like a rerun. Also, out of all the games that have been revealed in past Sony conferences, I’m disappointed we didn’t see anything from the Final Fantasy VII remake. I reiterate that this wasn’t a bad showing, and I enjoyed seeing gameplay for Spiderman and Detroit. I just couldn’t help but feel a little empty once it was all over. Sony still has a great future ahead of it, but it’s really testing my patience with some of these games.

Aaah! Real Monsters!

Microsoft

Microsoft’s press conferences tend to follow a tired formula of shooters, sports, and racing games, so I was pleasantly surprised to see a diverse lineup of (timed) “exclusives” and “world premieres.” There were some genuine surprises, particularly the Life is Strange: Before the Storm prequel that I’m now extremely excited about. I was also surprised to see things like Dragon Ball Z FighterZ, The Artful Escape, Super Lucky’s Tale, and the gorgeous new Ori game. One of the biggest points was the unveiling and price point of Xbox One X. Name jokes aside, I think it will be a decent console, and backwards compatibility with Xbox 1 (seriously, these names…) is icing. Although I think a lot of the new games should please Microsoft fans, there was little to convince me to want the Xbox One X. At least conference-wise, the show kept my attention for nearly two hours, which is a definite point for Microsoft.

My goodness, this game looks gorgeous.

Ubisoft

This year, Ubisoft put on the best press conference it’s ever had. That’s not actually saying much; I haven’t really been impressed by any of its previous showings. Regardless, this one had a lot of heart, from the excitement of Shigeru Miyamoto appearing on-stage to show off the Ubisoft-developed Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle to the finale announcement of one of the most long-awaited games, Beyond Good and Evil 2. My excitement upon these two games’ official reveals made up for other lowlights, like the annual awkward Just Dance presentation. Seeing everyone on stage crying with excitement over their games’ lineup was a beautiful sight, and I could truly see the passion they claimed to have. Overall, while not every game was interesting to me, the overall presentation brought a smile to my face.

Miyamoto Yves E3
Still one of the best moments of any E3.

EA & Bethesda

I’ll be honest: I don’t really follow these companies. Both EA and Bethesda make solid games that are loved by many. I just haven’t really gotten the opportunity to get into them. Hopefully, in Bethesda’s case, it will change with Skyrim coming to the Switch. Not only am I looking forward to try the huge open-world game on my portable hybrid console for the first time, but I’m excited to use my Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild amiibo to get a costume for my character. It was a big Nintendo moment for Bethesda’s conference, and I noticed. EA has FIFA ’18 coming. I’m not too interested in the soccer title, and even less so since it appears to be a gimped version of what’s coming to other platforms.

Skyrim Zelda Switch
Yes, please!

Next Time…!

Thank you so much for reading this special E3 edition of Weekly Panda Roundup! On Thursday, I will be uploading a review. And next week, my wife and I will be taking a little vacation, so there will be no posts or videos. We will hopefully still get up our weekly episode of Snipperclips, but otherwise, we’ll be taking a brief break. Thank you for your support and understanding!

Have a great week everyone! Until then, see you next time!

How was your weekend? What games are you playing? What did you think of the videos? What did you think of Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, and others’ E3 big press conferences? Which games are you most looking forward to? Let me know in the comments section below! Thanks for reading and watching!

  1. Great E3 overview, Mr. Panda! I had a great time last week watching all the conferences and seeing what goodies lie in store. Obviously, we had a lot to be excited about after the Nintendo press conference. There are a lot of highly anticipated games–and a few surprises–coming out for the Switch and 3DS! Sony’s press conference had good flow, but I was quite disappointed that there was no mention whatsoever of the FFVII remake, which is the one big thing I wanted to see from them. At least there was a Kingdom Hearts 3 trailer, though it wasn’t shown during the Sony presentation. C’mon Square Enix, where’s the goods?! Anyways, I’m also hyped for the Nintendo-Ubisoft collaboration of Mario + Rabbids. I had a lot of fun recording our impressions hot of the press, so please enjoy watching!

    1. Thanks as always for all your support and comments Crystal Dragon! I’m so happy we could watch and react to Nintendo’s big E3 Spotlight together! And I’m also glad that we were able to catch most of the other conferences. I was really looking forward to Sony’s, so I’m disappointed that it didn’t pan out to be as exciting. At least we got to see Square Enix’s presentation of the Final Fantasy XV universe and their upcoming fishing game. 😛 Monster of the Deep, hahaha!

  2. I hope you and your wife enjoy your vacation!

Great work with the roundup. I only watched Nintendo’s conference, so I can’t really say which one I liked best, but I was quite satisfied with what the Big N had to show.

    1. Thank you very much Matt! It’s a much needed one, especially for her! I think Nintendo had the best conference, and that’s not just me talking as a big Nintendo fan. Nintendo pleased its audience and had great reveals and trailers. Metroid Prime 4 by itself hyped a lot of people up, and ending with that Super Mario Odyssey trailer was golden. The other press conferences ranged from okay to good, but none was as consistently entertaining or exciting as Nintendo’s.

      1. Thanks! And I agree as a huge Switch fan that it’s great to see the system have such a bright life ahead of it. It’s good for Nintendo to have good competition, but for now, I’m glad that I have the system I’m most satisfied with!

  3. I wonder how well Mario + Rabbids will turn out. If it ends up being great, it could be one of the off-the-wall ideas the Switch could use at this point. If does turn out to be great and I get it, hopefully I’ll have more luck than when I tried out XCOM. Also, that photo is great; those two look like they’re really into it!

Hope you two have a great vacation. Where do you plan on going, by the way?

    1. I hope Mario + Rabbids ends up being good. I’m not the biggest fan of the Rabbids, but I like seeing Mario in novel gameplay. If this can provide something new for the Mushroom Kingdom, then I’m all for it. I haven’t played XCOM, so the gameplay will be new to me. If it ends up being a watered-down version of XCOM, it probably won’t be a big deal to me, as long as it’s fun. That moment between Miyamoto and Yves Guillermot was one of my favorite moments from E3. How could I not feel joy for this game after that?!

Thank you! It’s actually a staycation, so we’ll be staying home or to places nearby, but relaxing. We’ve spent a lot of time this past month traveling over weekends, which was fun but busy. So since we’re going through a time of transition, we figured a staycation is something we needed. Thanks for asking! 🙂

    1. Thanks a lot! The other presentations were fun to watch, even though I didn’t completely enjoy all of them. If only the FIFA franchise were only 18 years old. I think it’s old enough to do a lot of things beyond soccer!

  4. Great video work! I love your new format (and I’m also jealous of your plush Pokemon collection, haha). I’m thrilled to see so many awesome games on the horizon. I just need more time to play them… I’m also very happy with the E3 Amiibo announcements too 😀

    1. Aww thank you so much! And I’m so happy you like the format and set design! We love to show our plush collection! 🙂 We might have a rotating display of plush! I knew you’d be as excited about the amiibo announcements as I am. I have them all preordered! Haha oh no wallet.

      1. That’s awesome! I hope you and your husband have an great staycation! Any plans? We ended up doing a lot of errands during our staycation, so it unfortunately didn’t feel truly restful. Don’t make our mistake!

      2. Thank you, I can’t wait!! 🙂 I’m going to try to get everything done the week before so that I have nothing I HAVE to do the week of vacation! I think we just plan on going to the beach, to the springs, and maybe go to a park or two to hang out! All stuff that is within a couple hours driving distance so we don’t have to plan a whole lot. Last year on our anniversary we woke up and randomly decided to make a 4 hour drive out of state for the day and that was pretty fun, so who knows, we may do that again! 😉

      3. Thanks!! We had a really great time and are so bummed that it’s back to work tomorrow. 😦 We went to two different beaches, a natural spring, and a pool (my grandma’s lol) plus we went shopping and out to eat a few times. It was a fantastic, relaxing time!

      4. Yes! I’m always looking forward to the next vacation too! 😀 I’ll be going to Florida to visit Universal Studios and hopefully Disney World later this year for vacation, so I’m excited!

      5. Oh nice!! I haven’t been to Disney since 2003 and Universal since around 2006 and I used to live fairly close to both of them lol! I’ve been wanting to go to Universal for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, but the crowds scare me away!

      6. I’ll be going to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter for the second time ever later this year! I’m so excited to have Butterbeer and get more wands! You lived fairly close to them? I’ve always wondered what it would be like to live next to Disney World!

        Liked by 1 person

      7. I’s delicious! My wife and I tried to make our own homemade butterbeer with root beer and cream soda, but it didn’t quite turn out the same. Were you okay with hearing fireworks all the time?

        Liked by 1 person

      8. I’m sure it still tasted pretty good though! Yeah hearing the fireworks wasn’t really too bad, it was more of a distant booming that kind of sounded like thunder. When my husband and I first moved into that house we didn’t even know what it was! If we were a little closer it might have been annoying though!

      9. There are sometimes fireworks nearby our place when sports teams win or other random celebrations, but I couldn’t imagine it every night. I’d probably be waving my fist at Disney World telling them to keep it down, haha!
