Weekly Panda Roundup – Snipperclips, Zelda, and your name.

Round ’em Up!

Hi everyone! Welcome to the first edition of Weekly Panda Roundup! Why is it called that? Clearly, pandas are so wild that they need to be rounded up, of course! Just kidding.

In Weekly Panda Roundup, I will share the week’s latest videos from my YouTube channel. It gives me a way to post them without making a separate article for each one. Plus, I’d also love to talk about the individual videos and share any stories, which I wouldn’t be able to do otherwise.

But that’s not all! I want to use this space to talk about updates – whether about the channel, site, shout-outs, or miscellaneous recent happenings. For instance, in this weekly roundup, I’m sharing a spoiler-free mini-review of an anime movie I saw this weekend, your name. (Kimi no na wa.).

Basically, I’d love to chat with you all. So please feel free to let me know how you’re doing, what you’ve been playing, and whatever you want to talk about.

Without further ado, let’s round ‘em up!

Pandas at Play – Snipperclips

Part 2 of our playthrough of Snipperclips is up! If you haven’t watched the premiere episode, you can start with this one or catch the first part here. In Snipperclips, my wife and I play as paper-thin U-shaped creatures who must cut each other up to solve unique puzzles. In this episode, we continue playing through World 1, making scoops and getting spooked. Turns out Snipperclips was darker than we thought!

You can find the full playlist starting at Part 1 – Stabby Sticks here: http://bit.ly/2nFmc5v

Zelda: Breath of the Wild Spoilercast

We also posted a spoilercast for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Please don’t watch this video until you have finished Breath of the Wild. If you’re still working your way through it or haven’t played it, save this for when you’ve seen the credits. And when you do, we hope you enjoy our discussion on what we thought of the story and spoilerific elements of this amazing Zelda game!

Share any spoilerific thoughts on the video’s comments section to avoid spoiling anything for readers here. Thanks!

Makoto Shinkai’s your name.

your name. Spoiler-Free Mini Review

Makoto Shinkai’s your name. (Kimi no na wa.) finally arrived in the States last Friday, and I was fortunate enough to find it showing at a theater near me. The movie shares a similar body-swap premise with Freaky Friday but elaborates far beyond that, giving substance to this comedic trope. In your name, boy-and-girl leads, Taki and Mitsuha, wake up one morning and discover they’re in each other’s bodies. However, they’ve never met, which makes resolving the situation much more complicated. Though I found the teenage swap situation humorous, the story shined when it looked past that and revealed the deeper meanings behind the switch.

Stunning from beginning to end

To say I was moved by this film is an understatement. From beginning to end, your name. grabbed my heart, constantly twisting it as I experienced the rollercoaster lives of these two star-crossed teenagers. The amazing time-lapse visuals and a particularly beautifully animated sequence amazed me in a way only Ghibli films had done prior. And the music by Radwimps fit very well, offering both catchy alternative-rock vocals and breathtaking piano arrangements. I didn’t want this experience to end. But when the credits rolled, all I wanted to do was discuss the movie and catch everything I missed. Though I won’t spoil it, one of the biggest revelations in the movie made my heart skip a beat. Shinkai pulled out all the stops to transform a great movie into an excellent one. I love your name. This is rare for me, but I’d actually be willing to rewatch this masterpiece. With jaw-dropping presentation and a heartwarming story, I would easily call your name. one of my favorite anime movies of all time.

For reference, I watched the dub version. The voices were spot-on, and the performances by Michael Sinterniklaas and Stephanie Sheh were wonderful. Though there were some rough bits with some specific translations, I thought they handled those parts as well as they could. Either way, I highly recommend catching your name. if you haven’t already!

  1. I’ve been playing Toukiden 2 for the last few days. I really like it a lot so far. It has a lot in common with Monster Hunter, but it’s also different enough to avoid being called a clone in my opinion. I’ve also got over 60 hour in Mass Effect Andromeda. That’s another game that I really like and I think most of the criticism that it’s received is unfair. Mass Effect Andromeda, Breath of the Wild, Nier: Automata, and Toukiden 2 are taking turns being played right now. I want to review all of them if I can.

As far as real life goes I think I’m getting sick :(. Couldn’t even eat dinner tonight. Hopefully I’ll feel better tomorrow :).

    1. I’m sorry to hear you’ve been sick. Not being able to eat dinner sounds like a horrible feeling. I sincerely hope you can feel better soon, even before tomorrow!

Although I haven’t heard of Toukiden, I love Monster Hunter, so I might have to look in that. I’ve played another clone of MH, God Eater, and I just couldn’t get into it as much as I would have hoped. Hopefully Toukiden is better than that.

60 hours in Mass Effect Andromeda sounds intense! You must have gotten really into it, which is awesome! Breath of the Wild, is of course, awesome which you can probably tell from my thoughts. Look forward to your reviews of them!

      Get better soon! 🙂

      1. Thanks for the kind words :).

I’m drinking some herbal tea and it’s helping me keep my energy up. God Eater wasn’t for me either. Then again the PC port is terrible. It’s probably better on console. Toukiden is much better than God Eater in my opinion. The gameplay isn’t as good as Monster Hunter, but it doesn’t need to be in my opinion. This game actually has a story, characters, and lets me craft badass (am I allowed to write that here?) weapons and armor. The different fighting styles are pretty neat too.

I’m a huge Mass Effect fan. The trilogy is actually my favorite games of all time. I was really looking forward to Andromeda and I’m glad that I like it. It has issues, but it’s not terrible.

  2. We had a blast playing Snipperclips and we hope it brings a smile to your face. We’ve always enjoyed playing games together, so we’re glad to share that joy with the internet–together!

We also love foruming about our favorite games, like Zelda. I had a lot of fun talking about the juiciest parts of the game and our favorite characters. With a game this big, it’s impossible to cover everything in just 45 minutes. We wanna hear your thoughts on the game too and which parts you liked best.

Great review of your name! It’s so hard to talk about it with spoiling it, but it’s one of the best anime movies I have ever seen! It was romance with a sci-fi twist. This movie played with my heartstrings like a dancing marionette from start to finish. Seriously, my eyes were waterfalls. It’s easy to see why it was so insanely popular in Asia. This movie certainly lives up to the hype. A true masterpiece of animation! I already wanna watch it again!

    1. Yes, your name. was definitely worth the wait! I rarely see movies more than once, especially in the theater, but this is an exception. It blends drama and sci-fi elements of some of my favorite anime series into one complete package. It’s on a Ghibli level of amazing! Thanks again for everything! 🙂

    1. Your name has been super successful in Asia, and has been hyped since its release many months ago. I was hoping it would live up to the hype, and I can gladly say it did!

  3. Ahhh I really hope I can see Your Name this weekend! Also hope I can see the subbed instead of dubbed version 🙂 though maybe I should wait and buy it when it comes out on streaming so I can rewatch it?? HMM

    1. I know theaters have both, though I think mine only had dubbed, which I don’t mind. I don’t know when exactly it will come out on streaming or Blu-ray, but I’m definitely getting it when it does! I’m already thinking about watching it again in theaters so I don’t have to wait until then, haha!

  4. I’ve definitely gotta go check Your Name out. I probably won’t be seeing it in the theaters, but I definitely look forward to catching it on Blu Ray or TV. I wouldn’t be surprised if Toonami airs it although it would be stretching the “action” criteria.

In game news, I finally completed Breath of the Wild and Alter Echo so I’m moving to Ratchet and Clank Into The Nexus and continuing with Digimon World Next Order. BotW may not have had my favorite format, but it was still a good game overall. I’m ready for the next LoZ adventure. Right now I’m enjoying a brief Spring Break before things get hectic again. How’ve you been doing?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I know Toonami aired Summer Wars, which had long slices of everyday life, though it arguably has a lot more action than your name. Either way, this is one of few movies I’d be willing to get on Blu-ray and watch over and over.

Congrats on completing Breath of the Wild! Sorry to hear it wasn’t your favorite format. I hope that regardless of what direction they go with for the next Zelda game, it’s made with the same effort and quality they put into BotW. I had such an amazing experience with it and still go back to it even after I beat it. I’m curious about Digimon World Next Order. I played through Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth and enjoyed it a lot. It pushed me to watch the Adventure Tri series, which I have been loving so far.

Glad you get a reprieve and get to relax! Hope things don’t get too hectic and that you can still enjoy yourself! 🙂 Thanks for asking! We’ve been busy here at the Panda household getting our channel up and running, but it’s been a fun, rewarding experience, pushing my limits of what I thought I could do!

  5. Congrats on a successful start to your Youtube channel! I’m glad that you and your wife are having so much fun with this. Sadly, I haven’t had a chance to watch any of your epic videos yet, but I’m a loyal subscriber at least. I’m still not very far in BoTW (I just bought a house and finally left the Hateno area, haha) I can’t wait to watch you’re spoilercast when I’m done! It’ll give me more motivation to finish the game. 🙂

    1. Thank you for your kind words and encouragement! No worries! Just knowing that there’s someone who’s excited to see my videos means a lot! There’s always something to work for, and my hope is that it’s enjoyable for you when you do check it out! 😀

Congratulations on being a Zelda homeowner! That’s such an exciting and unique part of the game that I didn’t expect to be in there. Spoilercast is definitely something else so I can’t wait for you to hear and I look forward to hearing what you think too of these spoilerific topics! And hope you enjoy the rest of the game!

P.S. Thank you so much for the subscribe! 😀

  6. Your Name was a good recommendation; I ended up seeing it today. The theaters near where I live tend to be hit or miss when it comes to showing those kinds of movies, so I’m glad I got to see it.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Awesome! Glad to hear you were able to see it! The regular theaters I go to didn’t have it, so I went to a different one just to see it. Luckily, it wasn’t too far, and they had multiple showings. What’d you think of the movie?

      Liked by 1 person

      1. I liked it. It went in a direction I didn’t expect, and I like those kinds of movies where you don’t really know where the plot is going to end up; it makes for a nice surprise. Plus, it was absolutely incredible to look at.

  7. I know where to go when I need a burst of cheer and positivity! Your YT channel is already successful, and I’m so excited to see where it goes in the next while. I’m glad to be here at the beginning to see you guys grow more and more.

Loved the new intro, by the way. I’m a not so secret Genesis fangirl.

    1. Aww thank you! I would be more than happy to share as much cheer and positivity as I can! We all need it after all, myself included.

I’m so happy that you’re excited to see where it goes. We are too, and we’re always trying to make improvements and play around with ideas. Thank you so much for being with us from the beginning! I value your support a lot, and will always remember it. 🙂

And hahaha, thanks for the complement on the new intro! I am aware of your Genesis fandom! Funny enough, I didn’t grow up with Sega. Yet the first idea I had for an intro was parodying the Sega one. Imagine that! We had a lot of fun recording that, haha.

      1. Oh my goodness, we had so many bloopers and retakes, because we were trying to come up with a tune that was similar but not exactly like Sega’s. And then we were messing around with harmonizing. We had so many funny ideas that we kept rejiggering. But oh no! I deleted them… I wish I had the foresight to have just kept them all for a bloopers video. Aw…

  8. Well I’m doing one of my check-ins on your stuff so I’ll be going through this a bit to see what I missed… meaning you may see a bit of spam from me while I go through them right now 😛 I’m still avoiding all the Breath of the Wild stuff until I get a chance to get the game and play it. Most recently I’ve been playing through the Mega Man Legacy Collection on 3DS. I’m nearly done with it, as you will be seeing Mega Man reviews all this week from me as part of a Mega Man Week. The collection is coming at the end so I’ve got a little time to try these last few challenges anyway. First time beating almost all of these too. So that’s exciting. I also have picked Super Mario 3D World back up and nearing the end of that. A Mario Kart Week is still in the works but may take me a tad longer than expected. While I haven’t checked YET, I’ll check out your non-Breath of the Wild videos on YouTube since I’m a lot more active there, what with the other forms of content I put up that isn’t game reviews that make me check wordpress, haha. I may be bothersome there as well 😉 I hope you have better luck with your channel than I’ve had. Or at least better luck with the let’s plays because… well mine tanked hard both times. Sorry to disappoint you. I’m sure you were hoping you were rid of me… but no such luck.

    1. Thanks! I’ve thought about picking up Mega Man Legacy Collection, but since I already had the Anniversary Collection from years back, not to mention Virtual Console versions, I decided to hold off for now. It looks really fun though!

      Like

      1. Well yeah, if you already have the games, especially in the handheld format from the eshop, then there’s not a lot of incentive to get the collection other than the challenges really. But I no longer had the games in any capacity so it’s pretty handy for me. Plus it’s cheaper than getting them all separate while having even MORE content then virtual console ones. And having it in the box is a nice way to make my shelf of 3DS games look a little more decent 😛

  9. Do you guys have an idea how often you’ll be uploading podcasts. I would to hear one spoiler-free as I’m waiting to play Zelda when I get a Switch. Are you having any issues with your Switch. I’ve been hearing stories lately about warping, the dock scratching the tablet screen. Just want to be prepared when I find one.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Great question! Thanks for your interest! The answer is, we’re not sure. It really depends on if we have something to talk about and how well our podcasts perform. Sorry that our podcast is spoilerific. Most people that want to listen to Zelda tend to wait because they’re scared of spoilers, period, which is why we just decided to go all out and talk about what we wanted. Hope that you enjoy it when you do get Zelda and the Switch!

As for your other questions, I have had no issues with my Switch. I’ve heard about warping and dock scratching, but mine have no issues. I do have a screen protector, but I doubt it would help if there was any screen warping. Let me know if you have any more questions! 🙂

      1. Hmm, I didn’t get the impression that a lot of people were having issues. I’ve been hearing that it’s only a few people having problems. The ones without issues may just not vocal about having a fine Switch.

  10. I have so many videos to catch up on! I’m going to steer clear of the Zelda one until I play it, but I can certainly enjoy Snipperclips 🙂

Omg your name sounds amazing. Is it in theaters or is it out yet? I didn’t know anything about this movie until reading about here here. I’m a closet fan of the switched bodies trope, and I think about it a lot more than I’d normally be willing to admit hehe. The fact that Studio Ghibli did something with it makes me so happy, and I know that they managed it in a poignant, meaningful way. Done well, ti’s the perfect paradigm to force a different point of view, and it’s a shame it’s too typically only done (mostly) for laughs. Are you typically a one and done guy with movies?

    1. Awesome! Hope you enjoy them! Actually, I just literally put up a brand new video for a new game, Snake Pass. It’s special because 1) We have a webcam! So now you can see us make ridiculous faces when we mess up! Haha. And 2) We’re playing a 1-player game co-op, each holding half of a controller. We separated a Joy-Con pair so one of us controls the snake and the other one moves it. Our faces look so funny when we play it because we’re either freaking out or hysterically laughing. We had a hilarious time recording it! 😀

And your name is in theaters for 2 weeks in the US. This upcoming weekend is the 2nd weekend, but you’ll have to check if your theaters are showing it. We went to a theater that we usually don’t go to just to see this movie. I love switched bodies, and all kinds of tropes dealing with transformations. And the best part of your name is it does very unique things with it beyond the typical Freaky Friday setup. I love it so much. It’s actually not a Studio Ghibli film, but it’s animated so beautifully, who could even tell? I secretly like this more than any Ghibli film I’ve seen (and I love Ghibli). That said, it’s both funny and meaningful, and I can’t talk enough about the movie. I’m not just a one and done guy with movies. I don’t watch very many beyond some superhero movies and animated movies. Even within those limited types, I rarely want to see a movie a second time. This movie broke the trend, easily becoming one of my most favorite anime movies of all time. Probably one of my favorite overall movies too.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. I think Studio Ghibli pretty much made all other anime movies step up their game. I just googled it and it’s in my local theater. If I don’t catch it there, I’ll definitely pick it up when it comes out on DVD/Blu-ray.

I wish I had time to review movies like I do video games and books on my blog, but alas all I may end up posting are some older reviews I did a while ago. I really don’t even have time to watch movies any more, though I’m excited to see Kubo and the Two Strings is now on Netflix, so I might make time for that. I almost invariably enjoy movies when I get to see them, so I wish I could squeeze them into my schedule. Now that I’m thinking about it, I mostly watch superhero and animated movies, too! Those are the ones I typically catch, though I don’t dislike other genres. The same goes for TV shows. Most of my favorite ones are animated!

  11. Without having seen anything about the movie Your Name, I was pretty sure based on the picture you included it was by Ghibli studio. What great artwork again. I should check it out, seems like my kind of film. Don’t think it’s on in Europe though..

    1. Right? I can’t get over how stunning this movie looks. The director Makoto Shinkai has been making a name for himself with his last few films, and this takes the cake. The movie is making its rounds, so hopefully it makes it to you soon!

  12. Awesome round up. First off I’ve been playing Super Mario 64 DS and Kingdom Hearts 1.5+2.5 HD remix. Second, I’ve never heard of the Anime your name but after reading your review write up all I wanna do now is watch it, really cannot wait to check it out so thanks for the heads up. And third, I’m still playing through Breath of the Wild so I truly appreciate you asking not to chat about spoilers here but on the YouTube comments😬👍

    1. Thanks a lot! Awesome games you’re playing there! I actually played through Super Mario 64 DS recently for purposes related to the YouTube channel so it’s oddly fresh in my mind haha. Also, 1.5+2.5 HD remix sounds like an excellent package! I would have picked it up if I didn’t have the PS3 remixes already. Oh Square Enix, if only they were all in one pack at the start. I’m still playing through II.8 too, so man, I’m behind haha.

Your Name is awesome, and I hope you get the chance to see it sometime! I’m very spoiler wary in all my reviews, and with BotW especially, I want to make sure that there’s a right place to discuss spoilers just in case. Glad you appreciate that! 🙂
