My Nintendo Switch Launch Horror Story

Launch Day Woes

The Nintendo Switch is finally here! After months of raving about the new console and its upcoming games, I now have a Switch! I’ll have fresh impressions of the system up very shortly. But before I talk about my brand new system, I wanted to share my unique experience picking up the Switch at a little store called Walmart.

Switch Box.jpg
What could go wrong?

Twas the Night Before Switchmas

Like many others who now have the Switch, I was lucky and pre-ordered within hours of the January reveal presentation. I had done so online through Walmart and set it to ship to my local store. I soon discovered that the 24-hour brick and mortar store would be having a midnight launch, so I quickly inquired about it. The employee confirmed that they would be selling the system for both pre-orders and walk-ins. I made sure to ask if that applied to online pre-orders as well, and he responded that it didn’t matter how you ordered it as long as it was for that location.

On the night before Switchmas, I was brimming with excitement. I would soon have the Switch, and a day earlier at that! I traveled to Walmart and found a huge line of people hoping to get the new console. An employee asked if I had a pre-order, and once I revealed my slip, they sent me to a special line near the front. There were about ten or so people in that line, so I expected it to be a quick process. Based on previous launch experiences, I usually paid upfront and when midnight hit, I would receive a nicely bagged Switch ready to go.

Soon to be in my hands.

But once the clock struck midnight, nothing happened. As it turned out, the cashiers didn’t know where the Switches were. Several of them weren’t even sure what the Switch was or why we were lining up in the first place. Okay, so there was some miscommunication, but hopefully someone could figure it out. Instead, we waited about 15 minutes, asking what was going on and receiving no solid answer. This continued until the co-manager finally came and wondered why we weren’t receiving our Switches. He went to “the back” to look for them while we waited in silence. Once he returned with the systems, we cheered excitedly, ready to finally pay up and receive our shiny gifts. I was excited to watch the first customer grab his Switch and happily stroll off… but that wasn’t what happened.

For pre-orders, you generally pay a minimum deposit to reserve your purchase. However, the cashiers had no idea whatsoever how to ring up the first customer’s pre-order deposit. They could see that the customer paid a certain amount, but they didn’t know how to register that in their system. He was willing to simply pay in cash and get out of there, but they literally hid the Switch from him. It was only after ten more minutes that they resolved the problem and let him go. Okay, so we’re half an hour into this and the first person received his Switch. Can we ring everyone up now? Apparently not. The next person had the exact same problem, and it took them another five minutes to resolve that, which was odd considering it must have required the same solution to fix. To this day, it confuses me to no end. Were they just pressing random buttons the first time? Was this like one of those randomly generated puzzles that prevent you from using a walkthrough? After slowly getting through three out of ten pre-order customers, they got stuck once again. And this time, they just gave up.

Reggie Fils-Aime_shrug.jpg
Oh well.

One of the cashiers let out a sigh, exclaiming that they were not trained to do this kind of work as the night shift. I could understand her plight and felt sorry for her, but there has to be something wrong with the training structure at Walmart if this is the case.

A cashier asked us to fetch the co-manager who apparently had run to “the back.” I’m not even going to talk about how ludicrous that request was, considering there were three cashiers doing nothing up front. Nonetheless, a brave soul from our pre-order party had already ventured to the electronics section, saying that he saw the co-manager. Once we realized what was happening, this was the breaking point for most of us. The co-manager was in the back selling Nintendo Switches to the walk-ins. There were people who had just shown up without a pre-order who now had their Switch and were happily leaving the store. Meanwhile, those of us with pre-orders had no clue if we’d even receive one by the end of the night.

After selling the last of the walk-in Switches, the co-manager emerged from “the back” and asked why we were all still there.

Ash_Facepalm.jpg

After the co-manager came to smooth out the issues, it was my turn to hopefully have my pre-order go through, or not as would be the case. I should have assumed early on that if they didn’t know how to handle the in-store pre-orders, they would struggle with my online one. As it turns out, they couldn’t ring it up and said that apparently my Switch hadn’t arrived yet. Wait… what? My own personal Switch order, whatever that means, had not arrived from their Walmart facility. But what about all of those other Switches they sold? And why they did they tell me that I could pick it up with my online pre-order? There was some weird miscommunication going on. How they did handle it? They told me to go to the back of the line while they tried to handle the other customers.

Needless to say, I was frustrated. It wasn’t even about getting a Switch anymore. I just wanted to come out with something after this night. Once I got to the front again (after waiting through more prolonged instances of confusion with the register), I explained my circumstances, but the cashiers refused me the Switch. I sighed and walked away. I would get the Switch in a day anyway, so it would be fine. I was more upset about this whole situation and regretted attending this midnight launch in the first place.

Koizumi Switch Straps.jpg
The Switch was dangling beyond my grasp.

Then, the co-manager looked at me and offered me a proposition. He knew that I had a pre-order, that I had been waiting a long time that night, and that they would be getting my Switch in shortly. They currently had around ten extra units that nobody was ready to pick up, so he would let me buy a walk-in system if I just cancelled my previous order. Then he’d let me leave that night with a Switch in hand. I gladly took up the offer and thanked him profusely. Cancelling my pre-order was no issue at all, and the pickup person was very on top of helping me. The store even offered me a $20 gift card to compensate for the delay troubles.

Long story short, I did get my Switch that fateful night. It took a couple more hours than it should have, but I brought it home, set it up, played a little Breath of the Wild, and went to bed. Looking back after writing this, I’m not angry, especially considering any qualms went away once I was playing my lovely new console. I am still critical about what happened, but I understand that there are likely problems higher up the store’s chain of command that did not properly equip their employees to handle this. While I will likely be looking to other stores for pre-orders from now on, I still have to give props to the sympathetic co-manager and the resourceful employee at pick-ups. This felt like a long losing battle, but on the upside, it helped me appreciate my new system more.

Here it is, in all its glory!

Next Time… Switch Impressions!

Thank you for allowing me to indulge you with my launch day horror story. I wasn’t expecting to make this my first post after getting the Switch, but I wanted to share my story with you, both as a cautionary tale and a somewhat humorous retelling of my first Switch experience. Very shortly, I will be sharing actual impressions about the Nintendo Switch, so please look forward to it!

Do you have any launch day horror stories for any product? If you have a Switch, how did your launch experience go? Please share any thoughts and experiences in the comments section below! Thanks for reading!

  1. Oh boy, glad you got it in the end but i would’ve been furious! I lined up for the Wii back when it launched, lucky for me it went super smooth

    1. I’ve always previously pre-ordered new consoles and games from GameStop. There, I usually pay two hours before midnight and get the product bagged and ready to go at the exact time of launch. Unfortunately, I went with Walmart this time around… I’m glad everything worked out for your Switch pre-order though!

  2. Oh man, that sounds awful! Note to self: Walmart is not the best place for midnight launches or reliable pre-orders. I’m glad you still got the Switch! It sounds like you almost walked away empty-handed, and that would have been tragic. At least you were rewarded for your troubles. Kudos for riding out the storm.

    1. Thanks! It was almost worth it to endure the night to get the Switch early. Almost. Like I said, I’m just more upset that it was like this. If the whole process was snappier, but they refused the Switch when it got to me, I’d probably have accepted it. But to wait the whole night and almost come out with nothing would have been so upsetting. I’m glad it worked out in the end!

  3. Oh geeze… this sounds like a pretty miserable time, but at least it had a happy ending. I’ve never preordered a console, but I’m really glad to know to stay away from Walmart if I ever decide to do so. I can’t wait to hear about what you think of Zelda and the Bomberman game I saw your photo of.

    1. Thanks! Honestly, I had written both the impressions and my story at the same time, but this became such a novella that I decided to post this as a humorous precursor. I’ll have the real impressions up tomorrow. I just had to get this nightmare out of my system, haha. It’s at least a good lesson in not pre-ordering things from Walmart. If anything, just show up during the midnight launch and hope you get lucky. 😉

  4. Wow, that sounds like a long night! At least you got a little compensation out of it. I know sometimes it isn’t the clerk’s fault, but it’s so hard not to get mad when they solved the problem one time and yet didn’t remember for the very next transaction!
Can’t say I’ve had any launch day hassles (don’t really buy at launch), but I got a video game story: it was the day after Christmas, and I didn’t get a game to go with my new GameCube. So I clipped out a $5 Best Buy coupon from a video game magazine and headed off to buy Animal Crossing. Stood in the long, long line with my mom, and when we got to the register finally, the clerk argued with me that “$5 off video game software” meant only PC games. And yet Crash Bandicoot was on the ad. She wouldn’t budge or call a manager, so we left and paid full price at Walmart. Lost a sale and didn’t go back for a long time.
Anyway, glad you got your Switch!

    1. Thank you for sharing your story! I can’t believe that the clerk would say that it only applied to PC games. I swear, some clerks just do not care at all. There’s a difference between incompetence and negligence. I’m sorry that you had to endure that long line only to be told off by a rude cashier! I’m glad you were still able to get Animal Crossing, but it stinks that they wouldn’t just honor it.

And regarding the clerks in my situation, that’s what confused me the most. I would understand if it took 10 minutes for the first person to get through, but why did it take 10 minutes per person after that? It’s like they were just pressing things until it worked and didn’t think about remembering the process. The rest of the line was very frustrated too. But yes, thank you! I’m glad that I still got my Switch in the end that night!

    1. It really was! While I can certainly attribute this to Walmart not being a games specialty store, this can’t possibly be the only time they’ve ever done any kind of pre-order. It baffles me why nobody thought to think this out beforehand. Hopefully, they’ll learn their lesson for next time. Though considering they didn’t seem to understand what was going on after every single customer, I doubt it…

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Indeed! Though I’m not certain that any will actually happen. I also don’t think the employees even care if they receive it or not. They seemed happy just to get through that night.

      2. I suspect it was the store themselves deciding to do it rather than a decision from higher up. They just didn’t know they weren’t equipped to handle it. No matter, came out ok in the end 🙂

      3. I believe it was a nationwide thing so many stores in the chain participated in the midnight launch as long as they were 24-hour stores. Whatever happened, it’s done, and I’m glad everything worked out too! 🙂

  5. Oh man, as soon as I read the word “WalMart” in your first paragraph, I knew exactly where this story was going. I have two WalMarts in my town and they both have some of the worst trained employees in existence. That coming from a mage who ran a restaurant for ten years. How frustrating but I’m glad you took it so well and so patiently! I don’t think it’s right for customers to explode on employees even if something like this happens. I preordered from Gamestop and the Switch and Zelda arrived at my doorstep on launch day in the afternoon, so I’d recommend that for you next time unless you really want it at midnight. I had work early so that wasn’t going to be an option.

Looking forward to your impressions! Best regards.

    1. Haha, I wish I had your foresight coming in. I shop at Walmart sometimes, but I usually do self-checkout, eliminating the need to deal with their employees. I didn’t realize how much of a problem this would be once I actually had to check out a pre-order with them! I understand that some of them aren’t trained to do this, but the way they were speaking, they sounded content as if they didn’t think it would ever be important to learn from this experience. It was a bit saddening for me, and I’ve definitely learned to avoid big pre-orders at their store.

I’m glad that GameStop worked out for you and you got your Switch delivered in a timely manner! GameStop is usually good about that, and I’m used to doing GameStop’s pre-order midnight launches. With something like the Switch though, you pretty much have to deal with what you get. I missed out on the NES Classic completely, and I wasn’t going to do the same with Nintendo’s next big system.

Regarding GameStop, I’ve had excellent customer service regarding the big amiibo hunt a couple of years back. After missing a pre-order because of a disaster that temporarily shut down their website, the store called me weeks later and asked if I still wanted to buy the amiibo. They delivered it to me with free express shipping. Class act.

I’m glad you’re looking forward to my impressions! I actually typed those up alongside this story, but this tale went on for so long that I just split it up and gave it its own post. I’ll have the actual impressions up tomorrow!

      1. Foresight nothing! I’ve just already been burned by them too many times. They’re too bloated a corporation to function, it seems like. I missed out on the NES Classic as well. Still can’t get one. I’m just glad this time it wasn’t Nintendo’s fault!

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Yeah, there are definitely other stores I prefer. I’m glad that this wasn’t Nintendo’s fault, though I also wish that we didn’t have this limited pre-order culture where you have to be on the store’s website within the first hours to claim a claim on a system. Regardless, it sounds like Nintendo at least had a good number of Switches at launch and will hopefully restock them in weeks to come. More than I can say for the NES Classic, which I’m not sure exists.

      3. True, true. This is the first time in years that I’ve purchased something on launch day so it was a unique experience of tension. I thought it was going to be delivered on Monday but I was delighted to get it Friday. Some folks I know weren’t so lucky. Some got their Switch but not Zelda, or vice versa. I guess launches are hits and misses sometimes.

        Liked by 1 person

      4. That’s awesome that you were able to get it launch day as opposed to the week after. Besides Walmart, which screwed over many people’s shipping orders, I know Amazon also had some issues. It’s hit or miss, especially with delivery, but when it all works out, it’s such a momentous occasion to receive that big package!

  6. I won’t be getting my Switch for a while yet, but I feel that pre-order pain. Pretty much every time I’ve pre-ordered, it’s meant shelling out earlier only to get the thing ages after all the plebs who just buy on the day 😅 Only seems to add another opportunity for complication. It sucks 😆

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Ah, I’m sorry that pre-ordering has caused so much trouble for you in the past! I guess there’s a balance between being guaranteed to get something and getting it on time. Hope any future pre-orders go more smoothly for you!

  7. That’s awful. But at least you got it in the end. I’ve been hearing a lot of “confusion” with the Switch orders and such. I do feel bad for the retailers having to deal with it all. It must not be easy.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yeah, pre-orders seem like a unique beast, though no other store has ever given me trouble with them, so it really was specific to either my local store or Walmart in general. I wonder what the “confusion” overall is. I thought it had mostly to do with orders not shipping on time, but is there something else that has been going wrong with pre-orders?

      Like

      1. That’s horrible. I remember hearing something along those lines for Amazon and Target, though I hope that didn’t really happen. It stinks that pre-ordering something isn’t even guaranteed anymore nowadays. I had the same issue with my NES Classic Edition. I had a pre-order that got cancelled, and now I still don’t have one.

        Like

      2. Yeah, I don’t understand how they get cancelled. Do they just miscount the stock or something? It’s dumb.
And that’s awful about your NES Classic. 😦 It’s not fair.

      3. I have no idea how such mistakes happen. I appreciate your sympathy though. The same thing happened before with amiibo and then later the special Majora’s Mask New 3DS XL. I eventually got them months after, but there was a period of time where I thought I could no longer acquire them, as is currently the case with he NES Classic.

      4. It’s so disappointing. I still don’t have the NES Mini either and it’s back in stock, but twice the price. I still want it, but I want the Switch first.
People who didn’t get the NES should have had first dibs on the Switch, lol.

        Liked by 1 person

      5. They didn’t have to announce that before the NES came out. They could have just mentioned it when they revealed the Switch, lol.
“By the way, if you have the NES Classic, you need to wait.”

        Liked by 1 person

      6. Hahaha! I like it! Such sneaky tactics. They should also make it a rule where if you buy multiple NES Classics to scalp, then you’re prevented from the next three console launches, haha! Although I would hate it if I got the NES Classic and was denied the Switch for it. Why can’t we live in a world where we can easily find Nintendo products at a reasonable price at launch?

        Like

      7. I know, right? I hate that people just buy it only to resell it for a ridiculous price. I mean, they have nothing better to do? And you would think that Nintendo would have learned their lesson for the Switch when the NES Mini ran out so quickly.

        Liked by 1 person

      8. Exactly! Though to Nintendo’s credit, there were more Switches than NES Classics, at the very least. Though demand was higher than ever, so it still sold out in many places. Hopefully, Nintendo will restock within the next couple of weeks!

  8. I was expecting the co-manager to come out, shake his head, and say “I’m afraid Switchmas is cancelled this year…” I’m glad it didn’t out that way!

    1. I’m glad things worked out too! Walmart messed up their regular shipping pre-orders too, so it’s not a store-exclusive thing, though I sincerely hope that anyone else who pre-ordered in store at other Walmarts didn’t go through the same ordeal!

  9. Thanks for sharing your horrific tale! I’m so glad everything worked out for you in the end. In my experiences, Walmart is the absolute worst at handling this kind of thing. I went there once for a new Amiibo launch, and the employees had no idea what Amiibo were. It took a manager about 30 minutes to find them in the back and start selling them to people. Like you said, it’s not the employee’s fault so I’m never mad at them. The higher ups Walmart really need to fix their front line communication issues. They are now the very last retailer I consider buying things from.

    1. Thank you! I’m so glad everything worked out too! And oh my goodness, amiibo. I’ve never pre-ordered amiibo at Walmart (missed out on Gold Mario the first time), but amiibo pre-orders were my other sources of fret and worry back when they were big. I’m not surprised Walmart’s employees have no idea what amiibo are. They’re usually confused when I say anything game-related anyway. I’ve had a lot more luck with Target. They actually know what they’re looking for when they go to “the back.” I agree that the higher ups need to fix these issues and train their employees well for these situations. Otherwise, they’re unprepared, leading to frustrated customers like me. This has opened my eyes to Walmart at least. I used to shop there every now and then, out of convenience. I always used self-checkout though, so maybe that’s why I didn’t see the errors until it was too late. Thanks for allowing me to indulge you in my horror story!

  10. This is 100% a logistical nightmare and it’s the Walmart management structure’s fault for not preparing/training their cashiers and prepping their systems to handle this. I would’ve been livid at the lack or organization (not mad at the cashiers; it’s not their fault. You can’t blame people who weren’t properly trained in a situation). I’m not a fan of Walmart for a variety of reasons that aren’t valid to go into here, but it’s wildly unfair for them to not prepare their employees, expect them to know what to do, and to have customers waiting for that long when it should’ve been an easy and streamlined process. Grrrr, you’re far more patient than me for not being frustrated lol. I’m frustrated for you. Well, you did at least get your Switch even though it took some trudging through, I suppose, incompetent bureaucracy 🙂

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Well said! I have no knowledge on how Walmart’s organization or training works, except that it doesn’t work. You’re right that it’s unfair for the employees as well because this is putting them into needlessly stressful situations that make them look incompetent when there are other factors behind that. I’m glad none of us lashed out at them, but believe me, we were all pretty frustrated and mostly complained under our breaths. What should have been a great night turned into a disaster only mitigated by the fact that Nintendo did a great job with their new system. I think that’s what kept me going, and I’m glad that I was able to get it with some trudging. Otherwise, I don’t think I’d even be able to write about this. Incompetent berueacracy, ha! 😉

  11. Ouch! I suddenly remember why I avoid pre-ordering things. It’s not unusual for night staff to be clueless, as things are normally quiet work wise during those hours. Glad that the manager managed to help you out in the end.

    1. Yes, I was so sure that I was going to walk away empty-handed by that point, so it was an act of mercy that he still let me have a Switch that night. I usually only pre-order when it comes to Nintendo’s consoles or amiibo, both of which tend to sell out, never to return. I’ve never had problems with any pre-order at any other store until now. I think you’re dead-on about the night staff being used to the quiet hours. They really were unsure what we were doing!

  12. Oh geez reading through that was making me a little angry at the incompetence. Glad to see it worked out for you and that you a gift card for your trouble. I had a bit of trouble trying to get a Switch which I’ll explain in a post but luckily I’ve got one.

    1. I’m so happy that I at least got a Switch that night out of it. Seriously though, what a long night. If it was for anything else but the Switch, I don’t think I would have been willing to wait like that. But wow, am I enjoying my new console! 🙂

      1. Yes I’m glad you were able to get a Switch that night! I still wonder what they meant when they said “your” Switch wasn’t there yet! As if the online pre-orders were different somehow… I even shared your story with my husband, who said that’s why he never wants to go to Walmart! At least it was all worth it in the end 😉

      2. I agree! About having “my” Switch, it had something to do with online pre-orders being different, which they told me didn’t matter when I talked to anyone before the clerks. Besides, I think it’s pretty lame to keep pre-order stock away from people just because I did it from their website, especially when they have multiple units for walk-ins. They’re not going to win any more pre-orders from me after that.

        Liked by 1 person

      3. I agree, it is pretty lame. That was a convoluted situation for sure! It shouldn’t matter that you pre-ordered from their website, because you still pre-ordered from THEM! Yeah, I can see how you wouldn’t want to ever do that again!!

        Liked by 1 person

      4. I know right? Silly regulations like that are why I doubt I’ll be pre-ordering online from them again. And that whole night is also why I probably won’t be pre-ordering in general from them again. What a night!

Really it wasn’t their fault though, clearly a weak link in the chain of command!

    1. Oh believe me, we were all pretty frustrated. There wasn’t much we could do besides wait for them to figure it out. My eagerness for the Switch probably kept me going that night. I’m glad that by the end, I still got my Switch! Otherwise, this would have been such a waste of time.

  15. Wow, that had an unexpected (happy) ending! Glad to hear the pain of missing out was fixed by the co-manager. I get it though – you technically had a console already reserved for you, it just hadn’t arrived yet. That can seem ridiculous (I paid for it, it’s RIGHT THERE, and I can’t have it!) and I get both sides of the equation.

I had a similar issue with Walmart for the New Nintendo 3DS when the Black Friday limited edition released. No crazy stories about waiting in line though! Just took 2 full weeks to get it. Walmart: never again. It’s really a testament to how bad the company is run. The employees clearly weren’t trained for any of this, and it shows in more ways than just this one instance. The only midnight launch I ever attended was for the Wii, where I camped outside a Best Buy for like 14 hours, which was butter-smooth, and World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade at Gamestop, which went the same.

Anyway, stories with happy endings are the best kind!

    > Was this like one of those randomly generated puzzles that prevent you from using a walkthrough
This question can be applied to many things in life!

    1. Hahaha, right? I think my frustration was mostly based on everything that was going on at that night. I know I wasn’t entitled to a Switch that night, but boy did I wish that I hadn’t waited for that long if that weren’t going to be the case. Fourteen hours outside a Best Buy! That’s some commitment! Best Buy and GameStop are better stores to line up, from experience. Heck, I had better experiences with amiibo launches and the GameCube launch at Toys ‘R’ Us!

  16. Not a real personal story, nor a horror one really… but when the Wii came out we wanted one so badly for Christmas. And those suckers weren’t easy to get, either. I remember my dad going out to try and get one, and after trying a few times he came back and said they were sold out and that we wouldn’t be getting one for Christmas. We were so bummed. And sure enough, by the time Christmas rolled around, after we had come to terms with not getting the Wii… we opened up a box with the system in it and were shocked as hell. That’s about as close as I got since I usually get used systems myself or get them once the prices drop as gifts and stuff. I’m cheap 😀 At least you didn’t get shafted. It could be worse… you could be trying to get an NES Classic Edition D:

    1. Haha, I’m sure that made for a nice surprise though! And I am still trying to get an NES Classic Edition, unfortunately. Luckily, now that I have a Switch, the burn isn’t so bad anymore.

      1. I think my dad is still trying to find one when they came to places… but since Nintendo only produces 3 at a time it’s kind of hard to reliably get one without going to the scalpers. I guess Nintendo wanted to give the scumbags a Merry Christmas 😉
